HEALTHY START follows three women who are struggling to make the right decisions about their pregnancies, to do the best they can to give their child a healthy beginning. These personal stories illustrate the importance of early, continuous prenatal care to the health of every expectant mother and her baby. Each year, nearly one million American women deliver babies without having received adequate medical attention during their pregnancies. Without prenatal care, the babies born to these mothers are four times more likely to die before their first birthday. Through the stories of real women from a cross-section of America, HEALTHY START gives names, faces and voices to the statistics, personalizing the challenges facing pregnant and parenting women and their children.
